Whether you have your starters inside the house, in a greenhouse or under row cover these are some things to consider.
1. Take a moment and look around and make sure that there’s nothing prohibiting your plants from absorbing maximum light. Our seedlings were in the green house and we figured that was the best place for them to be. However, we soon realized that the plastic cover was old and mildewy and preventing proper light to the plants. You might have your plants in the house. Due to the inconsistency of light in doors, consider investing in grow lights. Grow lights are artificial lights that stimulate the photosynthesis process. It's a nice way to get your plants ahead start while waiting for consistent warm weather.
2. Also, make sure to use proper potting mix. Some people even add sand to their soil to ensure efficient drainage. If there are a lot of plants in your trays, you might want to consider ‘potting up’ and giving each plant some more space to grow and extend their roots. I like to look at the bottom of the plant trays, under neath the soil. If the root system is compact, that’s a sign that you’ve waited too long and those plants need some space.
3. Tending to the watering needs of your plants are highly important and sometimes hard to decipher whether your plants are receiving too much or too little water. One thing that helps is to make sure to check the soil to see if its holding on to moisture or not. It’s ok to skip a water session if your plants don’t need it. However, stay consistent. This way you don’t have to over compensate on water at random times. Lastly, all plants are not the same and shouldn’t be treated the same. Some plants need lots of water, while other are more tolerant and resilient. Therefore, know your plants. After a couple of days on a consistent schedule, the plant leaves should begin to restore itself.
If not….we have to consider whether there are nutrient deficiencies.
But that's for another blog.
